Obituary

Marvin Carl Tormanen, son of Charles and Ina (Niiranen) Tormanen, was born November 7, 1923 at Lake Norden, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education in Lake Norden. He was baptized and confirmed at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, rural Lake Norden. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Thompson on December 19th, 1953 in Brookings, South Dakota. They made their home on the family homestead near Lake Norden, and moved into town in the fall of 2004. During Marvin's lifetime, he farmed, owned and operated his own truck, worked construction and in sales. Marvin's most recent employment was working as a farm hand for over 20 years for Roland Rust farm, rural Estelline until health conditions forced him to retire. Those 20 years of work gained a special relationship with Roland, Cindy, Shelly and Joey Rust he cherished dearly. Marvin entered Golden Living Center in Lake Norden in July 2011 and later relocated to the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in July of 2012 where he died on Monday, September 9, 2013 at the age of 89 years. He loved to reminisce about stories from the good ol'days, playing guitar and singing to Ernest Tubb's country music. He enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors and fishing. Marvin's greatest joy was spending almost 60 years of marriage with his soulmate, Marilyn and their 13 children. With a big smile that was wrapped around his face, he always referred to his children as "his bakers dozen." He cherished spending time with his family, grandkids, great-grandkids and friends. He will always be remembered for his contagious smile and kind heart. Grateful for sharing Marvin's life include his wife Marilyn of Lake Norden; Pam Marchese, Estelline; Doug (Kathie) Tormanen, Lake Norden; Randy (Sherri) Tormanen, Belfield, North Dakota; Darrell (Kim) Tormanen, Hays, Kansas; David (Snowball) Tormanen, Estelline; Nancy (Todd) Bjorklund, Estelline; Sue (Fred) Reitsma, Lake Norden; Bonnie Kellen, Lake Norden; Arlene (Doug) Doescher, Arlington; Tracy (Darin) Laue, Castlewood; and Twins, Connie (Trav) Bratland, Willow Lake and Amy (Ryan) Miller, Estelline; 32 Grandkids, 40 Great-Grandkids and 2 Great-Great Grandkids; and one brother Alvin Tormanen, Walnut Creek, California and several nieces and nephews.
