Michael Joseph Simon, 86, died December 11, 2021 at Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Estelline. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service, at the church starting at 12:00 pm. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation can be made to the Estelline American Legion Post 184.

Mr. Simon was born April, 11, 1935, in Hoven South Dakota to Stephen and Lena Simon.

Mike grew up in Hoven and farmed with his family until he entered the Army in 1954. He served in Panama for two years. When he returned home, he attended the Aberdeen School of Commerce and studied business. He worked as a bookkeeper for John Massey in Hopkins MN. He then attended Sioux City Barber College. He worked as a barber in Mobridge and Madison, South Dakota. While in Madison, he met his bride, Doris Jean Hoff. They married February 21, 1963 and had 7 children. After Madison they moved to Selby, South Dakota where he managed Standard Oil Bulk Distribution. In 1976, They moved to Estelline, South Dakota and ran the Drive-Inn until 1979. He worked in a variety of jobs, finally settling in with the maintenance department at Estelline High School where he retired. He was commander of the American Legion Post 184 on two separate terms.

Mike was a quick-witted humor aficionado who was a great storyteller. In his early years he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed going to all his kids' sporting activities and following his grandkids' activities. He was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

He made a great impression on many people's lives and will be truly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Doris, sons, Mark (Elizabeth), Doug (Molly), Eric (Gena), and daughters, Michelle (Doug Tvedt), Deanna (David Stelter), Jennifer (Blaine Radtke). He is survived by his grandchildren, Alyssa, Sara, Emily, Matthew, Isaac, Emelia, Michael, Marlee, Ashely, Perrin, Logan, Sadie, Josey, Eli, Victor, and great grandchildren Hazel and Nora.

Mike is preceded in death by his son Todd, parents, Stephen and Lena, brothers, Clem, Richard, Stephen Jr., and Gene.
