Donald Schumacher, Officiating Interment Olivet Cemetery Lake Norden, South Dakota Orville M. 'Thor' Marttila, son of Jonathon and Elsie (Christensen) Marttila, was born May 23, 1921 at Lake Norden, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education in rural school near Lake Norden and graduated from Lake Norden High School in 1939. He continued his education at South Dakota State University for one year. After attending college, he farmed west of Lake Norden until his retirement in 1984. He was united in marriage to June Moen Burch on April 7, 1989 in Lake Norden. He died on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Beverly Healthcare in Lake Norden at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 25 days. He enjoyed playing amateur baseball for many years and also enjoyed bowling, golf and gardening. Grateful for having shared his life is his wife June of Lake Norden; two step-sons, David Burch and his wife Debbie of Lake Norden and John Burch and his wife Rosie of Santa Clarita, CA; three step-grandchildren, Daniel, Brian and Debbie; one brother, Marvin Marttila and his wife Elsie of Lake Norden; three neices, Joan Marttila and her husband Richard Gast of Bettendorf, IA, Kay Marttila of Plattsburgh, NY and Jane Odle and her husband James of Arlington, SD; seven great nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Thor was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Vernon and Howard.
