Obituary

Pearl N. Mohan, daughter of Henry and Mary DeWall, was born June 30, 1917 at Dempster, South Dakota. After the passing of her mother and infant brother, Harry, in 1919 she made her home with her grandparents, Gede and Pederje DeWall, in Dempster. She grew up in that area and attended school in Dempster and Estelline. She worked in a sewing factory in Estelline and on various farms helping family members raise their families. She was united in marriage to Willard Mohan on November 19, 1938 in Madison, South Dakota. They started farming on their own in 1942 in the Dempster/Estelline area and continued until retiring and moving into Estelline in 1989. Pearl entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center on January 15, 2013 and died there on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 6 days. She was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with family and the numerous friends she gained over the years selling her farm fresh eggs. Her specialty was her angel food cakes which she made for birthdays and special occasions for all those she loved. She was blessed to still be able to get out in the fields each year for spring planting and fall harvest on her grandson's farm and ride in the big equipment. She was proud to live in her own home all these years after the passing of her husband with her favorite companion, her cat Smokey. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter Amaine Johnson and her husband Gary of Estelline; a daughter-in-law Karen Mohan of Estelline; four grandchildren, Myron Mohan of Estelline; Brenda Quam (Mike) of Arlington, SD, Diana Johnson of Lake Poinsett, SD, and Tracy Johnson (LeAnne) of Estelline; 7 great grandchildren, Amanda Bode, Cody Quam (Erica), Cody and Kaitlyn Steffensen, and Emily, Brooke and Tyler Johnson; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband Willard on July 19, 1999, her son Dean on July 10, 1994 and two sisters, Margie and Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 9, 2013 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline with Fr. Bob Vinslauski officiating. Visitation will be from 5PM to 7PM Friday, March 8, 2013 at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.
