Phyllis M. Bruinsma, 88, of Castlewood, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society-Deuel County, in Clear Lake, SD. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Hamlin Reformed Church near Castlewood. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood, SD.

Phyllis Marie Sikkink was born on September 9, 1929 in Hamlin County, SD, the daughter of Lloyd and Nellie (Cook) Sikkink. She attended school at Dempster # 2 County School and Graduated from Castlewood High School in 1947. She received her Teaching Certificate from Central College in Pella, IA. Phyllis was united in marriage to Lester Bruinsma on July 11, 1950 in Pipestone, MN. The couple settled on the family farm near Castlewood, SD. Phyllis taught school at Dempster County Schools #1 and #2 as well as a country school in Bemis Township. She later worked at 3M in Brookings, Raven Industries in Clear Lake, SD and retired from Oak Valley Farm in Watertown, SD.

Phyllis was baptized and a lifelong member of Hamlin Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and was involved in the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed sewing, needle point, reading and raising her garden. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family, especially Thanksgiving with her siblings.

She is survived by her three children, Robert (Joy) Bruinsma, of Castlewood, SD, Carol (Richard) Berg, of Castlewood, SD and Dean (Carla) Bruinsma, of Clear Lake, SD; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Sikkink Jr, of Castlewood, SD; sister, Marlys Robbins, of Ocala, FL; brother-in-law Robert (Roylyn) Bruinsma, of Castlewood, SD, three sisters-in-law, Iva Mae Jensen, of Hendricks, MN, Mary Bruinsma, of Clear Lake, SD and Eleanor Wisner, of Sioux Falls, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; two brothers, Merle and Roy and two sisters, Marcella and Mary.
