(Butts) Foster, daughter of Earle and Addie (McNary) Butts, was born May 11, 1925 in Hanson County near Ethan, South Dakota. She received her education in rural school near White, South Dakota and was a graduate of Bruce High School in 1943. Phyllis attended General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison and received her teaching certificate. She taught rural schools for three years in Brookings and Deuel Counties. After her marriage to Melford Babe Foster on November 28, 1946 in Estelline they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1988. They then moved into Estelline and Babe died on May 5, 1991. Phyllis continued to make Estelline her home until moving to Brookings in September of 2005. She entered the United Retirement Center in Brookings on October 17, 2006 and died there on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 13 days. She was a member of the United Church Of Christ in Estelline, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Birthday Club. She enjoyed traveling and had visited every state in the union except Alaska. She enjoyed baking and canning and especially enjoyed sharing those items with others. Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Mark Foster and his wife Lorna of Brookings, Gary Foster and his wife Dianne of Bruce, SD; one daughter, Kathy Ching and her husband Terry of Watertown, SD; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Hanson of Zion, IL; and a host of other relatives and friends. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four sisters and one brother.
