Skarloken
December 10, 1927 – June 7, 2018
Preston J. Skarloken, 90, of Volga, formerly of Estelline, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Estelline. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday at the church. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Preston J. Skarloken was born on December 10, 1927, in Watertown, SD, the son of Joseph and Annie (Hanson) Skarloken. Preston received his education in Toronto, SD, then continued his education at Aggie School at South Dakota State University, in Brookings, SD. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Alyce M. Tribitt on November 17, 1956, in Clear Lake, SD. Preston farmed for 10 years in Deuel, Brookings and Hamlin Counties and also owned and operated the Skarloken Implement Shop from 1965 until 1999. From 1999 until 2003, Preston was employed at the Estelline Co-op. Preston and Alyce moved to Volga in November of 2015
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline, a lifetime member of the Brookings VFW, and the American Legion in Estelline. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway. He served as Mayor and on the city council for the City of Estelline. Preston enjoyed traveling and going to auctions and flea markets as a buyer and a seller and would collect pocket knives and caps. He also was a collector of toy tractors and cars. Preston held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He was always sure to let them get away with a little more and would make sure they were spoiled.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Alyce Skarloken, of Volga, SD; two children, Vickie (Kelly) VanderWal, of Volga, SD and Keith Skarloken, of Jackson, MI; four grandchildren, Dayton (Branon) Landmark, Mariah, Alicia and Preston VanderWal; one sister, Betty Stroschein, of Clear Lake, SD; sister-in-law, Betty Skarloken, of Tracy, CA; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rolland and brother-in-law, Maynard Stroschein.
