Priscilla Sweeney Castlewood, South Dakota Funeral Service 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 22, 2006 American Lutheran Church Castlewood, South Dakota Rev. John Sandstrom, Officiating Interment Castlewood Cemetery Visitation 5PM to 8PM Tuesday at the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood Priscilla Ann (Zirbel) Sweeney, daughter of Edward and Minnie (Kaaz) Zirbel, was born March 3, 1927 in Codington County, near South Shore, South Dakota. She attended school at Mazeppa #2 and Twin Brooks #4 East and graduated from South Shore High School. Priscilla attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and taught school in rural areas for three years and substitute taught in South Shore. She was united in marriage to Clark Sweeney on August 21, 1947 and they lived in South Shore until moving to Castlewood in 1963 where they owned and operated Sweeneys Locker and Grocery. Clark died in January of 1973 and Priscilla continued to operate the business until 1979 when she began work at J.C. Pennys in Watertown for 13 years. She died on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at her residence in Castlewood at the age of 79 years and 13 days. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood and was baptized, confirmed and married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in South Shore. Priscilla served as the first elected woman of the Castlewood City Council and the first woman member of the American Lutheran Church Council, also served 30 years as financial secretary, and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Sharon Prince of Wetumpka, AL, Pam Meacham and her husband Robert of Shelton, WA, Dennis Sweeney and his wife Chelie of Hayti, SD, Faye Wassenaar and her husband Joe of Downy, CA; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; one brother, Elroy Zirbel of Williamstown, NJ; one sister-in-law, June Zirbel of Sioux Falls, SD; her special dog Calley and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Clark, her parents and one brother Merle.
