Roger Allen Greenfield, age 79, of Castlewood, SD, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at his residence as the result of a farming accident. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, SD. Interment will follow at Dempster Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at American Lutheran Church in Castlewood.

Roger Allen Greenfield was born on July 3, 1947, to Peter and Agnes TeKrony in Castlewood, South Dakota.

Roger was raised on the family farm in Castlewood, a place that would remain at the heart of his life. It was there that he learned the value of hard work, developed his love for the land and livestock, and eventually raised a family of his own.

While attending Castlewood High School, Roger met Marilyn Mennenga. Their high school friendship blossomed into a lifelong love, and they were united in marriage on January 17, 1969. For 57 years, Roger and Marilyn shared a life built around family, farming, and countless memories made together on the farm.

Their son, Scott, was born on May 29, 1969, followed by their daughter, Melissa, in 1971. Roger was a proud father who loved having his children alongside him. Scott and Roger spent many years raising Suffolk sheep together and were active in 4-H, sharing not only the work of caring for the animals but also the pride and excitement that came with showing them. Missy was often right beside her dad on the farm as well, helping with the work and becoming part of the everyday rhythm of farm life. These were more than chores to Roger—they were opportunities to spend time with his children and pass along the knowledge and values he had learned growing up on a farm.

Roger spent his life farming and caring for livestock. He milked cows until selling the herd in 1998 and continued raising registered Suffolk sheep until 2024. He sold Suffolk rams for many years and was honored with numerous awards at the Watertown Winter Farm Show. He took great pride in the quality of his livestock and enjoyed talking with others who shared his passion for farming.

His dedication to agriculture was matched by his commitment to his community. Roger served as a 4-H leader and was involved with the Dempster Township Board, the Castlewood Fire and Ambulance Board, and the Weed Board. He believed in being a good neighbor and giving his time whenever it was needed.

Family was always an important part of Roger’s life. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he especially enjoyed his time with his granddaughter, Sydney. He took pride in watching her grow and treasured the memories they made together.

Roger had a special place in his heart for animals. His sheep and cows were a big part of his life, but so were the many dogs that kept him company over the years. There always seemed to be a faithful dog somewhere nearby on the farm, becoming part of the family and part of Roger’s daily life.

Those who knew Roger will remember his quiet humor, his strong work ethic, and, of course, one of his familiar phrases: “Well, you know…” Whether he was telling a story, answering a question, or simply carrying on a conversation, those three words were unmistakably Roger. They are a small reminder of the personality and warmth that made him who he was.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Marilyn; his daughter, Melissa; Daughter-In-Law, Amy; his granddaughter, Sydney; and his sisters, Mary (Bill) Edmonson of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Marsha (Terry) Carl of Sioux Falls, and sister-in-law, Lois Greenfield of Castlewood, SD.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Agnes Greenfield; his brothers, Ronnie and Rick; his son, Scott Greenfield; and several faithful dog friends.

Roger leaves behind a lifetime of memories—a life spent working the land he loved, caring for his animals, serving his community, and, most importantly, loving his family. The lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he gave will remain with those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
