Ronald “Smiley” Eugene Greenfield, son of Peter and Agnes (TeKrony) Greenfield, was born on October 8, 1941, in Estelline, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1959. Ronnie later graduated from Brown Institute in Minneapolis and began his working years in Chicago before returning home to help on the family farm due to his father’s declining health.
In the fall of 1962, Ronnie was drafted into the United States military, where he served in the Field Artillery. His service took him to Korea, Germany, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina—experiences that shaped his work ethic and quiet pride for the rest of his life.
On April 16, 1966, Ronnie married Lois (Tesch) in Watertown, South Dakota. Together they built a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and partnership. Ronnie’s career path was as multifaceted as he was dependable. He owned and operated Greenfield Trucking, spent several years working alongside Jerry Langenfield and Klein Amusement Company, specialized in custom baling, and worked for Estelline Seed. In addition to all this, Ronnie and Lois raised and fed sheep for more than 50 years—a testament to their dedication and love of the land.
Known to nearly everyone as “Smiley,” Ronnie earned his nickname honestly. Whether through a quick grin, a dry comment, or his steady presence, he had a way of making work lighter and people feel welcome. His love of the outdoors brought him great joy, especially during hunting and fishing adventures shared with friends and family. Ronnie also shared a special bond with his loyal dog, Double Trouble, his constant companion and trusted friend. Side by side through quiet days and long routines, the two were rarely apart—and they will be deeply missed by one another.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois; sister Mary (Bill) Edmonson of Lawton, Oklahoma; brother Roger (Marilyn) Greenfield of Castlewood, South Dakota; sister Marsha (Terry) Carl of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; many nieces and nephews who each held a special place in his heart; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Agnes Greenfield; his brother, Rick Greenfield; and his nephew, Scott Greenfield and several faithful dog companions who were part of his daily life and greeted him with the same loyalty he gave in return.
