(Schooley) Strait, daughter of Clive and Meta (Helbing) Schooley, was born April 24, 1923 in Hamlin County, South Dakota. She grew up and received her education in Oxford Township, District #4 in Hamlin County. Shirley was united in marriage to Hugh Strait on February 20, 1947 in Watertown, South Dakota. After their marriage they farmed in Hamlin County until moving into Castlewood in 1972. She was employed for 18 years as a cook at the Castlewood School until her retirement in 1986. She died on Friday, June 24, 2005 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 82 years and 2 months. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood and was also active in the ladies aid. Shirley enjoyed cooking and was known for her deviled eggs, homemade pies, potato salad and chocolate chip cookies. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Hugh of Castlewood; one daughter, Marlys Thyen of Castlewood; two grandchildren, Brian of Beaver Falls, PA. and Heather of Castlewood; four brothers, Charles Schooley and his wife Dorothy, Kenneth Schooley and his wife Karen all of Castlewood, Gerald Schooley and his wife Janice of Nacogdoches, TX, Richard Schooley and his wife Delores of Aberdeen, SD; two sisters, Virginia Kasten of Lake Norden , SD and Dorothy Hunter and her husband Kenneth of Hayti, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Robert, Don, Glenn and one brother in infancy and one sister Margaret.
