Reese, son of Martin and Josie (Pederson) Reese, was born July 27, 1933 at Wessington Springs, South Dakota. He attended elementary school near there and moved with his family to the Hayti-Castlewood area when he was 14 years old. He graduated as valedictorian from Hayti High School in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 he returned to Wessington Springs and worked on the Big Bend Dam at Ft. Thompson. After his marriage to Marlene Nelson on December 9, 1961 he farmed with his father and worked with the State Highway Department in Watertown. He moved to Lake Norden in the mid-1980's where he was employed at Davisco for many years. Recently he was employed as a custodian at Hamlin Education Center. Vernon died at his residence on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 7 days. He enjoyed playing pool and cards as well as photography. Grateful for having shared his life are one son Todd Reese of Estelline, SD; one daughter Tammi Krause and her husband Richard of Clear Lake, SD; five granddaughters; one brother Howard Reese and his wife Miriam of Omaha, NE; two sisters, Pauline Strait and her husband Robert of Lake Poinset, SD and Joyce Stolp and her husband Gordon of Custer, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy.
