Obituary

Virginia M. Kasten, 91, of Lake Norden, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at the Golden Living Center, in Lake Norden. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, February 19, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Norden, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden.

Virginia Mae Schooley was born November 10, 1924 to Clive and Meta (Helbing) Schooley, in Watertown, SD. She was baptized on November 25, 1924 and confirmed on June 12, 1938 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, in Watertown. She attended country schools in Hamlin County and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1942. She attended South Dakota State College in Brookings for a short time. Virginia worked at Montgomery Ward before marrying Milton Kasten on January 14, 1946 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown. The couple lived in Salem, OR for a short time before moving to the Thomas-Hayti area, where they farmed until 1956. Virginia cooked at Alsville Café, Andrews, Café and the nursing home and also worked at Riters Grocery in Lake Norden. Milton passed away on May 18, 1995.

Virginia was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Badger American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, canning, crafting, volunteering at the church and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was very well known for her homemade donuts.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Barbara (Arlo) Carlson, Robert (Susan) Kasten, Terry (Paulette) Kasten, Gerald Kasten and Deborah Paso, all of Lake Norden; nine grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Kenneth) Hunter, of Hayti, SD; three brothers, Richard Schooley, of Aberdeen, SD, Gerald (Janice) Schooley, of Nacogdoches, TX and Kenneth (Karen) Schooley, of Castlewood, SD; two sisters-in-law, Edna Mae Schooley, of Aurora, CO and Dorothy Schooley, of Castlewood, SD; one brother-in-law, Richard (Peggy) Kasten, of Hazel, SD and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Shirley Strait and Margaret Schooley; five brothers, Glen, Robert, Donald, Charles and Thomas Schooley and one son-in-law, Sonny Paso.
