Vivian Marie Amen, 83, of Lake Norden, South Dakota passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Lake Norden. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Lake Norden Evangelical Covenant Church, with visitation one hour prior. Private interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Vivian Marie Amen was born on November 19, 1931 in Volin, South Dakota, the daughter of Tommy and Ethel (Hardin) Pederson. She attended schools in eastern South Dakota, graduating from Winfred High School in 1949. Vivian worked in Carthage, South Dakota, where she eventually bought Viv's Café, selling the business when she married George "Fred" Amen on May 21, 1956. They bought the Gambles Store in Lake Norden in 1958. Vivian enjoyed the many summer vacations they took as a family through the years, visiting all 48 contiguous states. Vivian sold the store in 1984 and served as Lake Norden's Finance Officer for over 10 years. She was on the Lake Norden Ambulance Squad for more than 20 years, becoming one of the state's first female EMT's. She was on several bowling teams and leagues, travelling with her ladies bowling team for many years to national tournaments across the country. She was active in Lake Region's golf club and was in the local card club. Viv was happiest when she was busy; fixing things around the house (from plumbing to door locks to leaking roofs), doing paint-by-numbers or crossword puzzles, mowing, shoveling, painting the walls, bowling, playing cards, golfing, and on it goes. Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Debbie (David) Schuller of Andover, MN and Gary (Patty) Amen of Lake Norden; grandsons, Corey Amen of Lincoln, NE, Erik Schuller of Denver, CO and Peder Schuller of Madison, WI; as well as her sisters, Delores Ames of Miller, SD and Carol (Ron) Rhodes of Mountain Home, AR and brother Ronald (Irene) Pederson of Aurora, IL. She is preceded in death by her husband, George "Fred" in 1981; her parents; sister Sonja and brother Joseph. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Alzheimer's Association.
